Had exactly the same problem! When did you have the boiler serviced? if it's been a while then its very likely that the heat exchange fins in the combustion chamber are covered with soot, this causes the kerosene to burn smokey and cover the fins in even more soot.

To clean out the combustion chamber to quite easy if you know what your doing. You will need to remove the cover from the combustion chamber, it's the part where the flu pipe comes out of. then you will need to vacuum out all of the soot, and give the fuel jets a good clean too. This should solve your problem, if it doesn't then call a heating engineer, but its worth giving it a try, it could save you quite a bit a cash. The sooner you do this the better, the fuel jets can be damaged if you leave it for too long as the heat can't be exchanged and soon you won't get any heated water.

Good luck

You are pumping out unburnt hydrocarbons, which means you are burning money !!!

Get the boiler ( furnace ) serviced, you will actually save money by doing so.

Service , which includes gas analysis of the flue gases is around 拢50and worth every penny.
why are you even polluting the air with that to begin with? Must be a northerner get rid of the oil fired junkard you have and replace it with a more fuel efficient gas fired furnace.
I presume it is oil fired they will give black smoke if the jet is worn or lack of air
safest thing for you to do would be call a competent oil fired heating engineer!! soot is an absolute bug*er to remove from your hands tools etc and as previous poster says the boiler once serviced will have to be re comissioned by someone competent and in hand with a flue gas analyser and an oil pressure test gauge.

its not a job for a diyer to do am afraid remember an uncommissioned appliance is dangerous and if left in a dangerous state could KILL someone

hope that helps

Your boiler is burning way to rich.Call the furnace repair guy.Untill he can get out to you, check the air intake on the burner motor for dirt or dog/cat hair.Your heating system should be seviced every year. You will save money by doing so.
The boiler is burning at the wrong oil/air mix. This is not something you can fix yourself as you need to use a flue analyiser and a purpose built pressure gauge to adjust the ratio.

Call in an oftec registered heating engineer to service the appliance.
you might not mind getting your hands dirty but would you have a clue what you were doing, no really
if you got black smoke coming out you better call your oil company your boiler is breaking down that is the only thing that would cause black smoke i mean call your company know.tell them whats going on.
