I need help in choosing the best cruise ship- any advice?

We are planning to go cruising in the Western Caribbean in February. We want to port in New Orleans so we can catch Mardi Gras. The only one I can find so far is from Carnival- the Fantasy ship. The ratings for it were pretty poor. Has anyone ever sailed this cruise, and do you know anything about the ship? Is there any way to get the ABSOLUTE best deal or tips to upgrade rooms for free? Ive never cruised before, and seriously need some tips. Please help!I need help in choosing the best cruise ship- any advice?

Have you considered selecting a mini-cruise onboard a crewed sailing catamaran?

Most experienced travellers to the Caribbean will tell you that you cannot fully appreciate the beauty of places like the British Virgin Islands if are on a floating hotel.

Crewed catamarans offer a luxury sailing on smaller sleek, comfortable mega multihulls with a full service crew.

You can even book a 'cabin' with other couples aboard these cats with full course meals, sunset cruising and swims to nearby beaches without the hassle of stomach poisining wiating in lines or having to walk down those long corridors to get to your cabin.

A vacation onbaord a crewed catamaran is one of the 'best kept secrets' around but they will change as travel to the Caribbean explodes.

There are a number of catamaran operators in the Gulf and Caribbean who can service couples and groups.

Here are a few:

Also, remember that you need a passport to travel now and you cannot enjoy the splendour of the Caribbean onboard a massive boat which looks out of place in the Garden of Eden.
the best cruise is Disney - but they dont sail from New Orleans.

Carnival is OK, but mostly college kids partying and old people gambling.

upgrades for free? yeah, right.

you can get good deals if you buy your package early - the sooner the better. If you are shopping for Mardi Gras cruises now, you will get hosed, its too late. But its a great time to book summer and fall cruises.

Also, check with different travel agents, some have better deals with different cruise lines. Triple A has some bargains if you are a member.
I'm a big fan of sailing vacations. I've been on a big cruise ship before, not the Fantasy, and it was very nice but just recently my husband and I went on a ';crewed charter'; and it was just amazing!!!

If you're not familiar a crewed charter comes with a captain and a chef and they cater to your every need!!

My charter was on a 60ft beautiful Privilege catamaran called Best Revenge. The crew was so nice and they took us to amazing beaches and snorkelings spots.

It truly exceeded all our expections and can't wait to do it again. Here's their website address. You should check it out.
